Data & Analytics Solutions in the Cloud

SAP HANA Cloud, announced at SAP TechEd 2019, was first release in March 2020. Together with SAP Data Warehouse Cloud and SAP Analytics Cloud it is one of the three data and analytics solutions in the cloud, initially introduced as SAP HANA Cloud Services but this portfolio name is today no longer used.

In previous posts, we already provided a bit of background about earlier cloud-based SAP HANA offerings (including SAP HANA Cloud from 2012) plus information about the technologies used, like Docker and Kubernetes.

As interesting as the topic is, for those not all that familiar with containers, Dockers, or Kubernetes do not need to worry about a steep learning curve ahead as this all operates deep-down in the machine room of the cloud provider. The SAP HANA Cloud service itself, as you would expect, is easy to use.

This is the best place to start learning about the new SAP HANA Cloud service is the microsite saphanacloudservices.com. We will cover some resources below like the Onboarding Guide and video tutorials but make sure to check the Resources section for Quick Answers, use cases, and webinars. In addition, the Cloud tab of the  SAP HANA product page has also been updated. Here you will find more webinars, solution briefs, and other marketing material.

Documentation

For the documentation set go to the SAP Help Portal. Here we find guides similar to the SAP HANA platform edition, like the Feature Scope Description, Administration Guide, Security Guide, and several development guides. Also included is a Getting Started Guide, different from the one cited above.

We will cover feature scope and what’s new in an upcoming blog.

Cockpits and Database Explorer

Creating a new SAP HANA Cloud instance is simple and fast (and similar to the previous SAP Cloud Platform SAP HANA service, for those familiar).

  1. Provide instance name with the credentials of DBADMIN (no more SYSTEM)
  2. Specify memory, compute, and storage for the instance
  3. Optional: provide the specs for the Data Lake
  4. FIrewall settings: whitelist IPs to keep your environment secure

Once the instance is up and running, the endpoint is listed for client connections. From here we can access the SAP HANA Cockpit for system administration and the SAP HANA Database Explorer for the SQL Console and development.

At first sight, the SAP HANA Cockpit and Database Explorer are very similar to what we use for the on-premise platform and express editions. However, SAP HANA Cloud provides the most significant update of SAP HANA since 2010. More on this in the next blog.
