Explaining Project Lifecycle Management to a 6-Year-Old

ChatGPT keeps us all on our toes lately and everyone is beginning to realize that this is a true game changer. So, the sooner you start getting acquainted with this new “AI-thing”, the better, because this is not just one of these short-lived internet booms.

It has come to stay…

So, while I was playing around with it, I remembered that one of my children once asked me what exactly I was doing at SAP. This is when I remembered a quote that is attributed to Albert Einstein: “If you can’t explain it to a six-year-old, you don’t understand it yourself”.

So, I gave it a shot and asked the AI this question:

Here’s the response:

Have you ever tried to explain a complicated business tool to a young child? It can be a challenge! But as someone who’s worked with SAP PLM, I’ve learned a few tricks for making it easier to understand.

So, what is SAP PLM? Well, it’s a tool that helps companies manage the entire life cycle of their products, from the moment an idea is born to the moment the product is retired. It does this by providing a suite of tools that help manage product data, such as bills of materials (BOMs), engineering change management, and product documentation management. Essentially, it helps companies create and manage products in the most efficient and effective way possible.

But how do you explain all of that to a young child? Here’s one way to think about it:

Imagine you’re playing with your favorite toy. Maybe it’s a doll, or a car, or a video game. You love it because it’s fun to play with, and it makes you happy. But one day, you notice that something’s not quite right. Maybe the wheels on your car keep falling off, or your doll’s hair is getting tangled. What do you do?

Well, that’s where SAP PLM comes in. It’s like having a special helper who can make your toy even better. It can help you figure out what’s wrong, and give you the tools you need to fix it. Maybe you need some new wheels for your car, or a special brush to fix your doll’s hair. SAP PLM can help you find those things, and make your toy even more fun to play with!

In the business world, SAP PLM is used to help companies create products that are high quality, efficient, and cost-effective. But at its heart, it’s all about making things better and more fun – just like fixing up your favorite toy. So if your little one ever asks you what SAP PLM is all about, just remember: it’s like having a special helper who can make anything better!

End of story…

Tell me what you think. Was that accurate? For those of you who work in PLM and have children: try it out – do they understand now what you do?

If you don’t know what PLM is yourself, well, ask the AI. Or, even better, check out the SAP PLM Product Page in the Help Portal.
